CANS Implementation and Integration Efforts in Maryland
Making good decisions requires good information. In child serving systems, accurate assessment of children's needs and strengths is critical information needed to guide decisions about service recommendations that will enable children and families to reach their goals. When decisions are made in a team environment, information must be summarized and shared so that all participants are informed. The Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) is an assessment instrument designed to standardize the collection, sharing, and use of information about children's needs.
There are multiple versions of CANS Assessment tools used by our state's child service providers. The CANS Comprehensive and the Maryland CANS are the most widely used, while the CANS-F is used by individuals engaged in families systems work.
