The Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) Assessment
CANS Certification Training
The University of Maryland School of Social Work, through contracts with the Governor's Office for Children and the Department of Human Resources, provides in person and online CANS certification training to anyone working with children in Maryland's child welfare, juvenile justice, mental health and education system. In person trainings are held at monthly at the University Of Maryland School of Social Work, as well as bi-monthly in other locations throughout the state.
CANS Online Training Website
The CANS Certification Training is also available online to staff seeking certification as a CANS User. It is recommended that workers attend an in-person training for their initial certification. The online site is typically recommended for re-certification. In the instance where attending an in-person training creates a hardship (distance, workload, availability) it is acceptable to use the online certification site for initial certification.
In order to access the online training, staff will need to input a "discount code." The Institute for Innovation and Implementation provides the codes for all of Maryland's contracted children's service providers and public child welfare agencies. Each provider agency is asked to appoint an agency designee to request and receive the codes for their staff. The agency designee should email the request to CANS@ssw.umaryland.edu with the requested number of staff who will need to obtain their re-certification within the given year.
