Wraparound
What is Wraparound?
Wraparound is an evidence-based care coordination model targeting children, youth, and families with severe emotional or behavioral needs. Based in an ecological model, Wraparound draws upon the strengths and resources of a committed group of family, friends, professionals, and community members. Wraparound mobilizes resources and talents from a variety of sources, resulting in the creation of a plan of care that is the best fit between the family vision and story, team mission, strengths, needs, and strategies.
During the Wraparound process, the youth and family team works collaboratively, utilizing the strengths of the youth and their family to develop an individualized plan of care for the youth and caregivers. The team meets over time to implement this plan, monitor its effectiveness, and work toward success. Providing comprehensive care through the Wraparound process requires a high degree of collaboration and coordination among the child- and family-serving agencies and organizations in a community.
Wraparound in Texas
Intensive Case Management (ICM) is prescribed by the Texas public mental health system to be provided in Level of Care (LOC) 4 and, in accordance with policy, must follow the Wraparound planning process. ICM is defined as "a level of mental health targeted case management that includes a focused effort to coordinate community resources, uses an evidence-based Wraparound planning process to address a child or youth's unmet needs across life domains, and assists a child or youth in gaining access to necessary care and services appropriate to the child or youth's needs." Informational slides are available that map Wraparound planning activities to appropriate case management services and provide guidance related to the mental health case management standards within the public mental health system.
In order to bill for the provision of ICM, direct service providers must:
- Complete the initial course in the training series (Introduction to Wraparound) prior to the provision of services and to continue billing for ICM
- Complete the remaining two courses of the series (Engagement in the Wraparound Process and Intermediate Wraparound Practice) within one year
The trainings are designed to build on skill incrementally and in accordance to the Wraparound process model. They cannot be completed out of order or outside of the timeframe as developed (see training series information).
