Celebrating Children's Mental Health Awareness in May

The statewide Children's Mental Health Matters! Campaign brings together agencies, schools, nonprofits and other partners to hold dozens of educational and public awareness events during Children's Mental Health Awareness Week, May 3-9, 2015. Now in its seventh year, the campaign -- organized by Maryland Coalition of Families for Children's Mental Health (MCF) and the Mental Health Association of Maryland (MHAMD), with support from the Behavioral Health Administration and Maryland's System of Care grants - has goals to raise public awareness of the importance of children's mental health and to help connect Maryland families with the resources they need. SAMHSA's Mental Health Awareness Day Features National Event in Washington

The year 2015 marks the 10th anniversary of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day, which will be observed on Thursday, May 7. The day highlights the importance of positive mental health from birth. This year's Awareness Day will address the needs of children, youth, and young adults with mental health or mental health and substance use challenges and their families, with a national event on May 7, at the Lansburgh Theatre in Washington, DC. The national event will highlight strategies for integrating behavioral health with primary health care, child welfare, and education. Continue reading.

Dr. Albert Zachik Honored as Champion for Children by MHAMD

Albert Zachik, MD, Deputy Director of Children's Services at the Behavioral Health Administration, Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, was recently honored as a "Champion for Children" by the Mental Health Association of Maryland at a legislative briefing in Annapolis. Dr. Zachik received the Paula U. Hamburger Award. In presenting the award, MHAMD Chief Executive Officer Linda Raines said that Maryland's child serving system is the envy of most states because the outlook for children from birth to adulthood has changed dramatically for the better under Dr. Zachiik's leadership. She said he has played a central role in expanding school-based services across Maryland, and forged partnerships with juvenile services and other child serving agencies to tackle longstanding problems.
